Travel : How to travel on a student budget

Having a love of travelling but being confined by a student budget can be difficult. Those dreams of getting away can be cut short very quickly by a lack of funds. However with some careful planning a weekend away could be more affordable than you think. So how can this be done?

  • Forget your list!

My bucket list is full of new countries and cities I want to visit but many of the places I have actually ended up didn’t feature on this list at all. Sometimes being too confined by an idea can hold you back, so if you want to travel and have little money to do so the first thing to do is forget about the list. Of course if you have the means go to the places you most desire! However if you just want to get away and don’t mind where to there are lots of deals.

Using this “method” I have been able to visit Croatia, Rome, Edinburgh and Switzerland. Most of these flights haven ended up being about €40 return. So how have I done this?

  • Google Flights

This google feature is any travel lovers dream. Enter a date, a departure airport and explore the options. By just typing in Europe as a destination you will be able to discover where you can get to with your budget. Just this week I discovered, using Google flights, that I could fly direct to Malta for €29 return! Needless to say those flights were booked without delay.

  • Go off season

Summer of course is expensive, people take their holiday leave and escape to the sun. As a result of the demand ticket prices increase. So if you can, try take those weekends away (midweek even better!) off season. We have this idea that places are only worth visiting in summer but its not true. I spent the summer in the south of France and while it was gorgeous the 30+ heat makes it difficult to explore a city. Spring, Autumn or even Winter offer better deals and sometimes a better chance to explore a new place.

If you’re convinced and now wondering how you can afford to stay in a new city check out my early blog post here which has lots of helpful hints.

Happy Travelling

Yvonne

Thanks for the tips! I always wanted to travel, but I’m way too broke these days to comprehed it. I think I will diffidently visit europe once my kids are a bit older and I can fob them off on my parents for a weekend.

I’ve two days off this week and I’m dying to go somewhere, anywhere! I’m living on Google Flights and Skyscanner πŸ˜‚

I love what you say about forgetting about the travel list when on a budget, you can always save for those but there’s a romanticized beauty and picking a flight going anywhere and just going.

I never traveled when I was younger and now I have a family traveling isn’t so easy (or cheap!) so I would definitely recommend these tips to someone to get out there and see the world while they can! It’s great that you have seen so much of the world!

Going off season is great for so many reasons, you are right! I don’t know much about Google Flights, but I can recommend Skyscanner – found some incredible bargains there thanks to their “anywhere” and “cheapest month” options! Personally, I believe it’s easier to travel when you are a student as your schedule is more flexible, so you can browse flights whenever you have some money πŸ™‚ x

I’ll have to try out Skyscanner again, I have ended using Google Flights so much I nearly forgot about it, thanks for the tip πŸ™‚ It’s true students have more freedom in general although term time can still be hectic!

Google flights is one of my favorite resources too, I also like to use kayak though! I’ll usually start with google flights and then check kayak’s listing because I’ve actually had a few occasions where it gives me lower prices! I’m studying in Edinburgh for the semester and both have helped me so much in traveling. Check out my blog if you want to see where I’m going!
